Year 6 News
Spring 2 Term
Spring 2 has flown by in year 6! The children have been busy preparing for their SATs tests in May. It has been super encouraging to see how much progress the children have been making over these past few months. Their resilience towards tests allows them to face these with a positive mindset. We have been running a range of booster groups for writing, reading and maths; this has made a huge difference to the children’s confidence as it allows them to consolidate skills taught in lessons. The children have also had access to revision units set on LbQ (their home learning platform) alongside their regular home learning. It has been great to see the number of children who have used the extra revision units for practise of specific skills.
We began this half-term writing a diary entry from the perspective of Zoe in the book Floodland by Marcus Sedgwick. The children showcased their ability to use a range of punctuation (including semi-colons). Their characterisation was clear and they all produced emotive and realistic diaries. Our next journey used The Barnabus Project by The Fan Brothers as our hook. This gorgeous picture books tells the story of a ‘failed’ project – Barnabus – realise he is perfect just the way he is. The children loved creating their own creature and writing coherent non-chronological reports. We then also used this creature to write a persuasive advert for the creature to be adopted. The use of persuasive techniques: emotive language, rhetorical questions and facts was clear throughout their writing and made them a joy to read.
In maths, we have continued our revision plan. The children have had more opportunities to apply arithmetic skills into reasoning problems. We used the skill of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 and applied this to solving worded problems with money. Furthermore, we have recapped the key skills in FDP (fractions, decimals and percentages). We have looked at the relationship between these and how we can use our knowledge of their relationship to find more efficient methods to answering questions.
As the children are now fast approaching their SATs, we just want to remind them to continue tackling challenges with resilience.
The whole of the year 6 team are extremely proud and we look forward to seeing you all next half-term!

Spring 1 Term
Year 6 have had a jam-packed half-term filled with excitement, challenge and hard work. The children, yet again, have showed how resilient they can be across a range of different scenarios. Some of our highlights included Bikeability and mock SATs week. We have begun to run our booster group sessions for the children within school hours and it has been great to see how the children have tackled this extra challenge. We are also impressed with the children showing independence with their home learning which is set on LbQ.
In English, we have been using the book ‘The man who walked between the towers’ by Mordicai Gerstein to retell the story of Philippe Petit. The children have been fantastic at applying their writing techniques to this interesting true story. They have thought carefully about their sentence lengths and how they can build anticipation within their writing.

In maths, we have explored a range of measurement including: conversions, metric and imperial, volume, area and perimeter. The children have also been continuing their revision of the arithmetic skills in maths, focusing on multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000, multiplying decimals, adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and many more!
As the children are now fast approaching their SATs, we just want to remind them to continue tackling challenges with resilience. The whole of the year 6 team are extremely proud and we look forward to seeing you all next half-term!
